Pinterest asks a personal account for a first name and a business account for its business name, and publishes no length for it; SocialRails reports the field stops at 65 characters.

Quick answer: a Pinterest username can only use letters, numbers and underscores, must be 3 to 30 characters long, and cannot have spaces or punctuation or be only numbers. Those are Pinterest's own rules. A good one is short, easy to say out loud and tells people what you pin: your name plus your topic, like @sarahkitchen. Pinterest's username rules, in its own words
Pinterest's help page on editing your profile says your username:
- "Needs to be made up of just letters or a combination of letters, numbers and underscores"
- "Needs to be between three and 30 characters"
- "Cannot have spaces, punctuation marks or be made up of just numbers"
(Pinterest Help, "Edit your profile", checked 29 September 2026.) So a period is out, even though some guides say otherwise: it is a punctuation mark. Your username is also your profile's web address. In Pinterest's words: "With your username, Pinterest is able to create a unique web address for your profile. For example, Pinterest has the username “Pinterest” and can be found at www.pinterest.com/Pinterest."
Username or name: two different things
Your username is the address and the @handle. Your name is what people see at the top of your profile, and it can have spaces. Pinterest says: "If you have a personal account, you'll need to add your first name. Adding a last name is optional. If you have a business account, enter your business name." Many creators add what they pin after the name, like "Sarah | Recipes", so a visitor knows what they will find before they scroll. Pinterest publishes no length limit for the name; SocialRails, a social media software company, reports that the field stops at 65 characters.
What makes a good Pinterest username
- Short and easy to say. People type it, read it on a business card and hear it in a video.
- Your name or brand, plus your topic. Your name keeps it yours if your topic changes; the topic tells a stranger what you pin.
- The same everywhere if you can. If your Instagram or shop uses a handle that fits Pinterest's rules too, use the same one.
- Few underscores and numbers. They are allowed, but they are hard to say out loud and easy to forget.
How to change your username
On the web, Pinterest's help gives these steps: click Settings, click Edit profile, scroll down to Username, enter your new username and click Save. Because each username is a unique web address, a name somebody already has cannot be yours, and only Pinterest knows which are taken. This tool cannot tell you in advance: finding out would mean asking Pinterest about somebody else's account, which it never does.
