- Cropped to 16:9 it is 900×506 — at least the 800×450 Pinterest asks for.

Quick answer: a Pinterest profile cover must be at least 800×450 pixels, and Pinterest recommends a horizontal picture in 16:9. Both come from its Business help page, "Add a profile cover": It must be at least 800 pixels wide x 450 pixels tall
and We recommend you use a horizontal image with a 16:9 aspect ratio
. We make covers at 1600×900: the same shape at twice the minimum, so the picture stays sharp on a big screen. That size is our choice, since Pinterest gives only the minimum. Choose your picture above to check it, crop it to 16:9 and download it.
How to use it
- Choose a picture. It opens on your device and is never uploaded.
- Read the verdict. The size is checked on what is left after cropping to 16:9, because that is what your cover shows.
- Crop it, or fit it whole. Move the slider to choose what the crop keeps, or fit the whole picture with a white, black or matching border.
- Download it at 1600×900 and add it to your profile in Pinterest.
Pinterest cover size, banner size, header size: one picture
People call it the cover photo, the banner or the header. Pinterest calls it the profile cover, the wide picture across the top of your profile. Its rules are the two sentences above. A picture in another shape is cropped to fit the 16:9 frame, so crop it yourself first and decide what stays.
- Keep the subject near the middle. A wide picture is cut at the sides when it is cropped to 16:9, a tall one at the top and bottom.
- Keep words big and few. A cover is a picture across your profile, not a flyer.
- A logo or a square picture fits better with a border than cropped: choose "Fit the whole picture".
Why 1600×900 and not 800×450?
800×450 is the smallest Pinterest takes. Screens with sharp, dense pixels draw a picture with two or more of their pixels for each of the picture's, so a cover made at the minimum can look soft on them. 1600×900 doubles it at the same 16:9 shape. If your picture is smaller than that, the download is enlarged to 1600×900 and gains no detail; choose a bigger original when you have one.
