Your description
Quick answer: A Pinterest board description is, in Pinterest's own help, A little bit about your board.
Write it in one or two plain sentences that start with what the board's name says, then the two or three things on it, and who it is for. It is reported to stop at 500 characters. Type your board's name above and you get three versions to pick from.
How to use it
- Type the board's name as it is on Pinterest. Every draft starts with it, so the description and the name agree.
- Add what it is about: up to three phrases, the words people would search for, such as "small-space storage" or "one-pan meals". Add who it is for and its sections if it has any.
- Copy the one you like, change anything, and paste it in Pinterest: open the board, tap the three dots, Edit board, Description.
What makes a good board description
Pinterest says very little about board descriptions. Its help describes the field and nothing more. So the advice here is ours, and the drafts follow it:
- Lead with the board's name. The first words tell a reader, and Pinterest's search, what the board is.
- Write sentences, not a keyword list. Pinterest's Community Guidelines name
"stuffing" irrelevant keywords
among the tactics it acts against. A word said once or twice reads as a sentence; said four times it reads as stuffing. The checker flags both. - Two or three topics, not ten. A board about everything is found for nothing. If a board needs ten topics, it may want sections, or a second board. The board and sections planner helps you decide.
- Skip the hashtags. Pinterest's announcement of hashtags in 2017 said
Starting today, when you include hashtags in the description for a new Pin, Pinners can visit a feed of all the Pins that share that hashtag.
That is Pin descriptions; it never mentions boards.
How long a board description can be
Two sources disagree, so both are named. SocialRails' guide to Pinterest's character limits (February 2026) reports that board descriptions allow up to 500 characters. Pinterest's own API sets no maximum on a board's description. The writer counts against the 500, the app's cut. Most good descriptions are 100 to 250 characters anyway: all three drafts for the example board are under 170.
The board's name matters as much as its description. If you are still choosing one, the board name generator checks it against the 50 characters board names are reported to stop at.
