Ready to pin

Easy Dinner Recipes: 20 Meals Ready in… The first 40 characters — what a phone's feed may show.

Limits from Pinterest's API and product specs; the pin builder's 500 from SocialRails. Checked 25 September 2026. Nothing you type leaves this page.

Quick answer: Pinterest takes a pin title of up to 100 characters, but a phone's feed may show only the first 40 — so put the words people search at the front. Its API accepts a description of up to 800 characters, while the pin builder is reported to stop you at 500; write to 500 and both are happy. Alt text can be up to 500. Paste yours above: every limit is checked, the title is cut where a feed may cut it, and the fixes are listed in the order they matter.

    How to use it

Type the keyword you want the pin to be found for, then paste the title, the description and the alt text. Everything updates as you type, and nothing leaves this page. At the top is the verdict; under it, the title as a phone's feed may show it, and every check with its reason — anything Pinterest would not accept first, then what to fix, then what already works. Copy the link to send the check to a client or a VA with your text filled in.

Pinterest's limits, and where each comes from

    • Title: 100 characters — Pinterest's API. Its ad specifications add that "depending on the device, the first 40 characters may show in people's feeds".
    • Description: 800 characters in Pinterest's API, but 500 in the pin builder, as SocialRails reports it (February 2026). The two numbers are both real — they come from different doors into Pinterest — so the checker warns between 500 and 800 rather than pretending there is one limit.
    • Alt text: 500 characters — Pinterest's API.

What makes a good pin title

The title is the first text Pinterest and a person read. Lead with the words someone would type — "Easy Dinner Recipes", not "You Have to Try These" — and let the rest say what makes this pin worth the click: a number, a time, a result. Keep the keyword inside the first 40 characters, because on a phone that may be all of the title anyone sees.

    What makes a good description

One or two sentences a person would actually say: what the pin is, who it is for, and why to click. Put the keyword in the first sentence, once. A description that is a comma-separated list of keywords, a pile of hashtags or a paragraph in capitals reads as spam to the person deciding whether to click — which is the only reader whose decision counts.

Alt text is not a second description

Alt text is read aloud to people who use a screen reader. Describe what is in the picture — "six weeknight dinners on a wooden table" — rather than repeating the keyword. It is the right thing to do, and a description of the image is exactly what alt text is for.

Before you write: is the keyword worth it?

A perfect title for a keyword nobody searches is still a pin nobody finds. Check the demand first with the free Pinterest keyword checker, design the pin with the free Pin Designer, and tag its link with the UTM builder so you can see what it sends.

    FAQ

How many characters can a Pinterest title have?
Up to 100 characters (Pinterest's API). Depending on the device, the first 40 may be all that shows in a feed, so put the keyword at the front.
How long can a Pinterest description be?
Pinterest's API accepts up to 800 characters; the pin builder is reported to stop at 500 (SocialRails, February 2026). Write to 500 and it fits either way — one or two clear sentences are usually enough.
Should I use hashtags on Pinterest?
A few do no harm, but a pile of them reads as spam to the person deciding whether to click. Put the words people search into your title and a real sentence in the description instead.
Where should the keyword go in a pin title?
At the front. A phone's feed may show only the first 40 characters of the title, and the first words are also what a reader scans. "Easy Dinner Recipes: 20 Meals Ready in 30 Minutes" beats "20 Meals Ready in 30 Minutes — Easy Dinner Recipes".
What is alt text on a pin?
A description of the picture for people who use screen readers, up to 500 characters. Say what is in the image; it is not a place for a keyword list.
